SAMSKARA – VARSHAVARDHANA OR ABDA POORTHI
According to some sutras certain ceremonies are to be performed, either every month, or on the day of the birth for a full year or on the parva days, which are the Amavasyas of the months of Ashada, karthik and Phalgun months. The ceremonies should be performed after the first year, every year of life of the person.
The person should offer sacrifices to Agni, Indra, Heaven, Earth and Visvedevas. After offering sacrifices to these deities sacrifices should also be offered to the thithi and nakshatra of ones birth.
Baudhayana Grihya Sutra prescribes for longevity an offering of cooked rice every year, every six months, every season, every month, on the nakshatra of birth.
Apararka quotes verses of Markanteya to the effect that all should on the occasion of the day of birth every year celebrate a festival (mahotsava) honouring and worshipping elders, Agni, Gods, Prajapati, ones pitrs, the nakshatra of ones birth and brahmanas.
The krtyaratnakara and the Nityacarapaddati also quote the same verses but also add that on that day one should worship Markanteya(who is believed to be immortal ) and the other seven chiranjeevis namely Aswattama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibheeshana, Kripa and Parasurama.
While Samskaraprakasa describes the festival as ‘Abdapoorti’, the Samskararatnamala describes it as’Ayurvardhana’.
There is a practice of making the child to cling to the principal post or pillar of the house or the pillar used for churning out butter from buttermilk, every month, on the birthday of the child.
